PRESS RELEASE 2001

L'Argentière - La Bessée has been hosting an International Iceclimbing meet since 1991.

This recently evolved sport consists of climbing waterfalls petrified by the winter freeze. For a short season these icefalls provide a unique playground for those intrigued by cold exposed situations. They demand of the climber both strenght of character and commitment, as well as experience. Ice is a constantly changing phenomenon. It evolves according to variations in temperature and the laws of water science. To the eye, it takes on fantastic and unreal shapes, and it is this which attracts the climbers.

This event enables those drawn to such a sport to meet every year in a prime european site. Based in the Fournel and Freissinières valleys in the heart of the Ecrins National Park, the venue offers participants a hugely varied choice in diversity, number and heigh of icefall.

Our dates fot 2001 are :
10th, to 14th January

The 2000 event brought together height hundred climbers of more than twenty height nationalities :
This year we certainly will welcome more. The warm atmosphere created by the participants has made the meetings an occasion for easy exchange and friendship.

The programme.
Shuttle buses are available for both climbers and spectators.
Instuctional sessions for beginners will be provided by local mountain guides.
The meeting point in the Fournel once again offers hot drinks, and a service which includes the loan of equipment for testing.
Evenings of entertainment are planned : audiovisuals of the Fournel, a jazz night, etc.

Mark these dates in your calendar : we're looking forward to meeting all participants.

See you soon,

the Fournel team.

ADVICE Weather and snow-level informations will be billed at the Pool Bar. Before you leave, consult them and find out about site conditions from the organisers. In case of bad weather, events and shuttles for other sites will be organised. Don’t forget your skis and snowshoes, and climbing boots. The object of this meeting is to help you discover our ice-fall sites. We will help you get to the sites by shuttle. After that, you are in the winter mountain environment under your own responsability. You must be certain that snow and ice conditions are good and that the trail conditions correspond to your technical level and to security regulations. Don't go on to a fall if there's another team in front of you. As well as your climbing and security material adapted to the trail, don't forget your Arva, spade, and sounder. We will always be ready to help and advise you. And finally, remember the trail guide and good climbing ...
